The White rhino is a dull grey color, however, because they love to wallow in mud, their skin can become brownish or take the color of the mud they wallow in.ĭespite their huge size and bulkiness, White rhinos can run as fast as 40 miles per hour. White rhinos have two horns, the front one averaging 60 centimetres long, but occasionally reaching 150 centimetres. They have a squared (not pointed) upper lip, a longer skull and less sharply defined forehead and a more pronounced shoulder hump than the Black rhino which supports its large head. ![]() The record size of the White Rhinoceros was about 3,600 kilograms in weight The White Rhinoceros is native to north-eastern and southern Africa. This rhino can exceed 6,670 pounds (3,000 kilograms), have a head-and-body length of 3.35 – 4.2 metres (11 – 13.9 feet) and a shoulder height of 150 – 185 centimetres (60 – 73 inches). ![]() The White Rhino has a massive body and large head, a short neck and broad chest. The White Rhinoceros is well known for its wide mouth used for grazing and for being the most social of all rhino species. The White rhino is larger than the Black rhino, in fact the White rhino can grow to be larger than any other land mammal except for elephants. Behind the elephants, this is probably the most massive remaining land animal. The poaching of these majestic creatures has been responsible for the death of tens of thousands of rhinos around the world.The White Rhinoceros or Square-lipped Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the 5 species of rhinoceros that still exists and is one of the few megafauna species left. Of course none of this is true, rhino horn serves no medicinal purpose whatsoever but it is a testimony to the power of tradition that millions of people believe that it does. Rhino horn is widely used in chinese medicine as false claims have been made through the centuries that it can be used to treat ailments as diverse as treating snake bites, curing typhoid, headaches, feverish colds, carbuncles, arthritis, expel fear and anxiety, hallucinations and even cancer. Poaching of rhino horn for the production of traditional Chinese medicine is the greatest threat facing rhino today. Some young calves can fall prey to big cats, crocodiles and hyenas but the main factors affecting the rhinos wild population include the illegal rhino horn trade, habitat loss and political conflict. There are numerous threats that have contributed to the decline of the rhinos wild population, nearly all of which are caused by humans. This provides a protection layer and as the liquid evaporates it reduces the temperature of the skin. ![]() The rhino will do this by wallowing in pools of water or mud and coating themselves almost entirely if possible. As the rhino live in a very hot environment it has to be able to keep itself cool. In other areas the skin can be thin enough for a mosquito to draw blood. The skin of the rhino can be up to an inch thick in places providing a good defence against attacks from other rhinos or predators. They are able to run up to speeds of 45kph for short periods of time and despite their appearance, are very agile animals. The ability to move its cone shaped ears independently along with olfactory senses allows the rhino to be aware of the presence of predators and other rhinos effectively. However, they compensate for this by having an excellent sense of smell and good hearing. They have very poor eyesight, they can see a moving object at a distance of around 100 metres but only approximately 50 metres for a stationary object. They have a very large head that is supported by a huge muscle mass that forms a hump over their shoulders and they will only look up when alarmed. The southern white rhino is the largest and considered to be the most placid of all the rhinoceros family.
